K-2 October/November Newsletter We’ve been enjoying a busy October with lots of fall-themed projects. We created all sorts of pumpkins using yarn, beads, and pipecleaners. We also made our own applesauce and tried it with and without cinnamon to test out which style we preferred. We raked big piles of leaves to jump in, and collected colorful leaves which we used for observational drawing activities. In our art class with Zoe, the 1st and 2nd graders completed their quilt, inspired by the book “Tar Beach,” by Faith Ringgold. They used fabric scraps to portray their own homes, and we connected each piece together to create a group quilt (which will be proudly on display outside the Extended Day Room!). In November, we’ll begin our “specials.” Specials are weekly activities that run for 4 weeks in a row on Mondays and Thursdays (days subject to change in the future). These activities allow our students to get a little deeper into a particular topic or project. We hope you are settling into the new school year. The goal of the 3/7 monthly newsletter is to provide you with updates and information and to give you a glimpse of what your child is up to during the afternoons at HEDP! Like last year, the 3/7 homebase will be located in the extended day classroom next to the gym. Here you will find the students involved in many activities including clubs, homework time, team building, art, Legos and games! We will have a “comfy corner” to give a home-like vibe to the classroom where students can relax, read, and be with friends. We are excited to welcome you back into the classroom at pick up where you will witness your child in action. We will collaborate with each student individually and as a team to hear about their goals, ideas, and expectations. From this collaboration, we will create a curriculum and clubs based on what their interests are. We encourage each of them to play an important role in planning the activities. We look forward to working with your child and family and wish you all a wonderful year! If you have any questions along the way, please do not hesitate to reach out. The 3/7 team of teachers are: Malaina, Emily , Bradley and Peter. This year marks the start of the 10th year Malaina, Emily and Brad have been working as a team and they are thrilled to welcome Peter to HEDP. Homebase for 3/7 is the lower extended day classroom next to the gym. This room will be used for homework/reading for 5th, 6th and 7th grade students and indoor activities during inclement weather. This room, which connects to the gym, gives students the ability to transition between physical activity and more structured activities in the classroom. Additionally, we will use the library for homework/reading for the 3rd and 4th grade students. Each afternoon, to keep students in a good routine, our schedule will be as follows: *Arrival and Attendance: Please let us know if your child will not attend HEDP on any regular scheduled days. *Homework and reading: Please be sure your child has a book to read after completing homework. *Snack, Outdoor Play: Playground fun, sports, games, thematic activities, and more! Please provide a snack for your child each afternoon. *Indoor Activities: Group games, independent activities and gym time towards the end of the day will take place in the classroom and gym. *Lobby: During the last 5 minutes of the day we will start out way towards the lobby for the end of the day pick up. The 3/7 students will take part in a wide range of activities throughout the school year based on the interests of the students in the group. From arts and crafts to games and team building, we cannot wait to learn what the students love and are interested in learning. We are excited to create a curriculum of clubs for your child to take part in again this year. Each afternoon, we will have a 45 minute homework and reading time. This will give students the opportunity to relax and read and/or get a good portion of homework done before going home. We are a mixed age group and understand that different grades have different amounts of homework. For our younger grades, we encourage students to bring a preferred piece of reading material (books, comics, puzzle books, picture books, magazines) from home to enjoy after homework is complete. We have a limited number of HEDP computers for students to use for homework. Each student must have a note from a teacher indicating a computer is needed for homework. We will do our best to have as many students as possible get the opportunity to use a computer when needed. Please be aware with the limited number of computers available, your child may not get all of their computer homework finished. Use of the computers for anything other than homework is not allowed and will be enforced. Please follow the 3:00, 3:30, 4:00, 4:30, 5:00 and 5:30 pick up procedure. This will ensure ease of being let into the school by an HEDP teacher to gather your child’s belongings, sign your child out, and pick up your child. The 3rd and 4th grade backpacks and belongings will be located in the long hallway headed towards the gym in cubbies on the right side. The 5th, 6th, and 7th grade backpacks and belongings will be located in the cubbies outside of the 3/7 classroom. The sign out station is located in the 3/7 classroom. It is essential you take the time to visit the room to sign your child out daily by PRINTING your name and indicating the time you have picked up (even if you are picking up from outside). Please also connect with a 3/7 teacher before leaving with your child. This helps to ensure we see you pickup your child. The safety of your child in this matter is our priority. We WILL go outside as much as possible throughout the year. Please be sure your child is dressed for the weather and has sweatshirts, rain boots, jackets, extra layers, snow boots/snow pants, hats, or gloves when needed as the weather changes. It is essential to have the proper gear to get the students outside daily. The weather can be very different in the late afternoon hours so having clothing options will make it more pleasant for your child to spend time outside. Wishing each of them a great year ahead! --------------- Clark Extended Day PK newsletter A look back at September During the first month of school the children participated in cooperative games and activities that allowed them to get to know each other and ease into the routine of the 2023-2024 School year. The classroom teachers implemented a “Helpful Hands” reward system where children can earn a “high five hand” when they are observed going above and beyond to help a friend. When the children earn 12 “Helping hands'' the children will celebrate with a surprise. Our extended day community has already demonstrated so much kindness towards each other and are well on their way to earning their second surprise. The children showed off their rhythm and singing during meetings with Angela who is teaching them songs in Spanish as well as a weekly visit from Zoe who plays her guitar and is teaching the children songs to sing along too. Under the leadership of Zoe the children created beautiful self portraits inspired by Chuck Close during a weekly art class. During the month of October! During the month of October the children will participate in small group activities such as painting, drawing, and building with magna tiles while learning about Autumn. We will continue to be outside as much as possible so the kids can run around, use their imaginations in the outdoor dramatic play area, use the sensory tables, and get some fresh air. Please dress your child warmly as we go outside every day. Zoe will be joining the group on Wednesday afternoons to offer an art activity to the children. She will join the group on Friday afternoons for a weekly sing-along. We would like to invite parents to schedule a time to visit the children at Extended Day to share a family tradition, read a story aloud, or show off something that might be of interest to the children. We are bringing this tradition back as the children happily invited their families to the classroom. If you would like to schedule a time please speak to Ellie at pick up time and she’ll be happy to schedule an appointment or talk with you further about a visit.
