Ice Skating Club at Riley Rink
During the weeks since the new year, the HEDP clubs have been a big success. For this series of clubs, we took a poll from each of the HEDP grade level groups (K, 1-2, and 3-6) and created clubs that were most popular. The suggestions given by the individual groups were very interesting and have led to some great new experiences for all.
Art/Music: In art club, we have been exploring art activities using a variety of crafting materials including flour, glue, paint, sponges, food coloring, and colored paper. This club is going to make a change in the next few weeks as we explore some more music as we did during the last term and learn some new songs.
Building: In building club, children have alternated between common constructing materials such as Lego blocks, Popsicle sticks, and wooden blocks to more obscure materials such as cardboard, plastic bottle caps, and, industrial plastic pieces. The goal of this club is to complete the challenge of the day with the given materials (sometimes the material itself is the challenge). This club has created towers, four-legged structures, structures that a teacher can stand on, and even marble runs from the variety of materials they were given.
Games: In this club all involved are encouraged to work on hand-eye coordination through a variety of activities including, throwing games, soccer, and other partner games. This club gives them the opportunity to not only enjoy some active play, but to work cooperatively with some classmates for some enrichment filled fun
Art: Art club in the 1-2 group has been mostly focused on pipe cleaner people. Each student was given a pipe cleaner and instruction on how to twist it into his or her own pipe cleaner person. After this, they had to name it, make clothing for it, pick its hobbies and then make it a home. Then they got to take it home. This activity was greatly enjoyed by all involved and we are now making a change to a new project. Please ask your child(ren) about their new project.
Computer: In Computer club each student is allowed to pick from a list of websites to play some games that work on either computer accuracy (typing, mouse use, etc.) or educational games (physics, geometry, reading). This gives them a chance to work on these important skills while enjoying some time with technology.
Science: In science club, we perform experiments in many ways. Some experiments are hands-on and others are observable with teacher presentation. So far, we have worked on making “sea worthy,” buoyant rafts, watched Soda explode in a geyser reaction, and watched an egg slowly start to get sucked into a bottle. Students have also made baking soda and vinegar reactions. There are a few more experiments to do and all are looking forward to doing them.
Art: In the 3-6 group art started off with 3-D object creation and has quickly evolved to flip book and movie creation. As most of us are aware of before the days of CGI, cartoon movies were made of thousands of pictures. By drawing these pictures and uploading them into some software, we are making short movies the old fashioned way.
Computer: This club has also changed since the beginning days of C++ programming to a club based on ingenuity and problem solving. The majority of the kids are currently involved in one physics game or another. The most popular being fantastic contraption (which can be found at www.fantasticcontraption.net). These games foster the use of engineering (including problem solving, material management and [in this case] basic physics), and accuracy of mouse use on the computer. They also allow for very inventive ideas, as the possibilities in many of these games are limitless.
Football: Some of our 3-6 students have decided that a friendly game a football is just what they need to use some energy and work together with a group of classmates. While some of the students already know most of the rules, it has been a great experience to learn some of the finer points of the game, while others learn the rules as we play. Accepting referee calls that may differ from their opinion fosters great coping skills as well.
Future Club Plans
Heath PTO After School Activities start on Monday March 4th. Due to this the Club schedule and offerings will be reevaluated as the children involved in these activities becomes available to us.
February 1/2 News
Pre-K Extended Day February News
This month we will be focusing on the letters J,K and L. During our first week, the class will be organizing a jump jack jolly. This great activity is where the class gets to see how many jumps that they can do and practice all week to see if they can beat their number by the end of the week.
Throughout the second week the class will be exploring Kangaroos and their habitat. Tying in once again the jumping, we will all see how well we can do tasks while jumping like a kangaroo.
For our last week in February we will end in the letter L, and how appropriate for us to talk about love and all the feelings that come with that powerful emotion.
Our class truly enjoys putting on plays, so we will be reading more books that have good storylines as well as many characters for our friends to play. We typically run these plays toward the end of the afternoon so I encourage you to ask your child about them as they are quite fresh in their minds.
