What has happened:
January was a jolly month! We made our own beautiful art using simple dots and patterns, you can see your child's art work displayed around the classroom. Making dumplings has a huge hit! Thank you so much to Ya-Lin Huang, Ying Xie, and Fei Du for taking time out of your day to come to extended day and teach our students how to make dumplings. During E week we learned how the earth rotates and revolves at the same time as it travels in space. We also learned how long it takes the for earth to rotate and how long it takes to revolve around the sun. Letter F’s week we read stories about different families and who makes up a family. Letter G focused on geometry and as a class we completed a challenge to find all the different ways to fill a hexagon using triangles, trapezoids, and rhombuses. It was a huge success! Half way through the week on half way day we switched to letter H; and ended the week with hat day. What is to come: In February we will be doing letters I through M. During letter I we will be constructing igloos with sugar cubes and icing. For letter J we will attempt to make our own jam! We will be designing our own kites for letter K. Our class will be exploring words that start with the letter L through art. We will be ending February with music week! We will be learning about beats, learn a new song, and make our own instruments. Wish list: Empty glass jars with lids Empty coffee cans Empty water bottles Any empty containers with lids NO SCHOOL: 2/20-2/24: February Vacation Warm Wishes, Angelica, Christiane, & Caroline

February 2017 During the month of January the children in the classroom focused on achieving the goals that they set for themselves this school year. We continued to welcome our outside readers every Tuesday as they continue reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl, along with many other fascinating stories related to our units of study. The children who attend HEDP on Fridays were invited to ice skate with the older children at Larz Anderson rink. The skating has been great fun for those who chose to participate! Those who stay behind have had the opportunity to participate in planning special activities such as making their own wands out of chopsticks and preparing tacos (Yum!) to enjoy with the entire group upon their return from ice skating. During the month of February the children are going to continue to accomplish their goals with help from the rest of the group and the teachers. We will be making homemade ice cream on Groundhog day in hope that the groundhog sees his shadow and Spring is on the way! Later in the month the children will have the opportunity to mix ingredients to create a temporary tattoo mixture. With parent permission, the children will use their imaginations and artistic skills to apply temporary tattoos to their hands and arms. We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day with the outside readers completing “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by enjoying chocolate dipped fruit sticks (Yum again!) Finally, please check out our “Friend-ship” wall that will be installed during the month as the children discuss and identify ways that they demonstrate friendship Each child will create a “friend-ship” to be displayed in the cafeteria on our wall. Please make sure that as the weather changes that children are dressing appropriately because we always go outside to enjoy some fresh air. Please make sure you sign your child out each and every day! We would like to thank the families that donated items to our classroom and the program. A couple of reminders this month… Monday,February 20th-24th -February Vacation (No School) Wish List Clorox Wipes Rainbow looms bands Aqua Beads Another month has flown by! January was packed with exciting projects and activities. On our first week back from break we welcomed the New Year by making resolutions. We had our own New Years celebration which included a countdown to “midnight” while watching the ball drop and throwing pom poms in the air. On week 2 we focused on the moon and the stars. We read lots of books and learned a lot of new facts. We also completed some star and moon art projects. We had the opportunity to go to the Extended Day play put on by the 4th graders! It was great experience for our kids to witness older students perform and practice being a great audience. After MLK day we spent the week talking about leadership and reading books about influentual civil rights leaders. A few of our students got to take on leadership roles in our classroom by teaching classmates something new. Our last full week in January was dedicated to learning about Chinese New Year! We made chinese lanterns, dragon masks, and fire breathing dragons! We have been spending time helping each student achieve a goal they set for themself this year. It has been awesome to see them make progress towards reaching these goals. We will finish off January and move into February with a week dedicated to sports! We will talk about and practice some sports we already know. We will also learn about sports in other parts of the world that we may not know much about. Other Febuary themes will include science, friendship, and Dr. Seuss! Please remember to sign your child out at pickup! Thank you! Warm wishes, Krista, Tess, and Kelly The first grade is looking for cardboard for a project we will be doing Friday, February 10th. We would love for you to bring in any you may have at home, thank you! February 2017
Heath Extended Day 4/7 Newsletter What has been happening in 4/7 2017 has been off to a busy start with so much accomplished already in January! On Thursdays, students have been involved in clubs here at HEDP. In Creative Handwork Club, students made duct tape wallets, felt stuffed animals, and oil pastel drawings on canvas. Students in Art and Technology are working on self portraits using technology: Students took “selfies,” enlarged them, changed the color contrast, and then printed them. They then used masking fluid to block out portions of the portrait and then water colored the entire portrait. Once the masking fluid is peeled off, it turned into a beautiful, colorful self portrait! Students in Lovable Lunch Club have learned how to make lunchtime favorites such as grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese, and bagel pizza! Students in Ball Games Club have had a great time playing basketball, kickball, and dodgeball! Each of these clubs will run for three more weeks in February and each club will have another new exciting plan each week! In January, we also held a variety of cooking activities to help students achieve some of their Annual Goals. Students made ice cream cake, eggless donuts, and chocolate chip cookies! Students have learned that with every goal we make, achieving it may take a couple of tries and we learn from the mistakes we make along the way. During our chocolate chip cookie making activity, the cookies did not come out as desired. It turns out a key ingredient was not added. We look forward to learning from this mistake and trying to make them again in February. Another annual goal was focused around two weeks of Art in Science: a time where we delved into activities such as making silly-putty, building paper-maché volcanoes, and learning about the Earth’s atmospheric layers by beading layered necklaces. In addition to all of these small-group activities, the students have also been involved in large-group math bees, trivia games, and weekly group challenges. On January 11th, HEDP 4/7’s Drama Club debuted their (1st ever!) play titled “The Case of The Castafiore Emerald”. It was a “who-done-it” mystery set in 1940’s Europe, and was loosely based off of the Tin-Tin comic under the same name. The production was entirely created, from inception, by the 4th graders themselves: they helped to write lines, developed plot twists, developed their characters, built a set, created a costume wardrobe, and practiced their dramatic skills weekly. The teachers we very impressed by all of their hard work! The end product was truly outstanding, and will be repeated again in the Spring 2017 with a brand-new production and team. New (and previous!) Drama Club members are welcome to sign up after February vacation. What to look forward to in February During February, we will continue to help students achieve more cooking goals. We will learn how to make key lime pie, redo our chocolate chip cookies, and learn how to make cupcakes. We also continue on with our Thursday clubs up until February vacation! On February 3rd we will have a football fun day in honor of the Superbowl and encourage students to wear their Patriot’s team colors on that day! The week of February 13th we will do Valentine’s Day activities and end the week with a movie just before February vacation! Friday Ice Skating The kids have had such a fun time with the special event! The next two dates for skating are on Friday, February 10th and Friday, March 3rd. Repeat Reminders: PLEASE provide your child with appropriate outdoor clothing. Children need boots, gloves, hats/mittens and warm jackets. We do not allow the children go on the field if they do not have boots or snow pants. In addition, it may be helpful to supply your child with an extra set of clothes (socks, pants...) Please sign your child out each and every day! This is a legal document and needs to be completed by you on a daily basis. Remember to encourage your children to bring a book they find interesting to read during homework time. Our friends will often mention that they have already looked at the books we have on our shelves and want something specific that they saw during the school day/they have at home. Thanks!
