Dear Families,
Heath Extended Day is excited to open pre-registration for the entire Heath community. This pre-registration period will be open though March 31st and will determine if a lottery will be needed for any classes that are overenrolled. Your family will be contacted via email on April 1st should there be a lottery. It is essential that you do not email and contact us as all information will be posted to our website at http://heathextendedday.org. I highly recommend you read through our website to learn more about our program, view our family handbook and see what is keeping our current classrooms busy. It is essential that your family fill out this link (PRE-REGISTRATION IS CLOSED) in order to be placed on our list. This pre-registration process will determine if a lottery will be needed to accommodate all families that may need after school care. This year, we have reached capacity in certain classrooms and it seems like the same will be true for next year. Please take the time to complete this today! Heath Extended Day 5-7 Newsletter During the month of February... During the month of February 5/7 students were busy taking part in student goals, clubs and wish days. We finished up on weekly cake baking due to many students goals of wanting to learn how to make cake from scratch. During last two weeks of this activity students made homemade pineapple upside down cake and cake pops! We hope that students are able to take what they have learned home with them and make yummy treats for your family! Mondays clubs of cartooning and board games are going great and the students seem to behaving so much fun. These two Monday clubs will continue into March for a couple of more weeks. Wish days have been a huge hit! February wish days have included: ice cream party, Trivia day, group game day, and chocolate chip brown cake baking day! February’s family dinner consisted of breakfast for dinner. Students made scrambled eggs, hash browns, french toast and fruit salad. For dessert, students made mini ice cream cookie sandwiches. February’s iron chef competition was quesadillas. Ingredients included corn tortillas, onion, broccoli, corn, potatoes, beans, rice, tomato, peppers, avocado, and a variety of different cheeses. Each team chose a bag from each category of items and had to make two different quesadillas with the ingredients found in their bags. One group had to use the mystery ingredient in one of their quesadillas. They were happy when they found out they were able to use steak strips in their recipe. Students were creative in the pairing of ingredients and really enjoyed tasting the different recipes. They were surprised with how good a corn, broccoli, and cheese quesadilla could actually be. One group was amazed at how quickly thirty minutes went by, as they ran out of time to cook their quesadillas in the skillet so had to resort to the microwave to finish their quesadillas. During the month of March... During the month of March we will continue focusing on student goals and wish days. Planned this month for student goals is to learn how to make chocolate ice cream and learn how to bake a vanilla cake from scratch. Wish days this month include strawberry frosted cake, caramel cake, engineering day, Alice in Wonderland themed tea party, movie day, pizza party, and a soccer tournament day. February brought so much fun in extended day! Our letter of the week unit is rolling on. Our class loved constructing igloos out of sugar cubes and frosting! We also learned a new song with Zoe for our letter M week. Be sure to ask your children if their “ears hang low”. What is to come: During letters N & O we will be making noodle necklaces and learning some facts about octopuses. Letter P will be dedicated to plays. We will be visiting some classic short stories to act out as well as make scenery accordingly. For the letter Q, we will be making a classroom unity quilt. Rain and rainbows will be our scientific focus for the letter R. Lastly for the letter S will be all about space! We will learn the names of planets and see how far the planets are from each other. Are you ready for a marvelous March? We are! This past month in February we built igloos out of sugar cubes and frosting, made valentines day cards for our loved ones, and tried new musical instruments! During the letter of the week unit everyone is expanding their vocabulary as we introduce new words every week to go along with our focus letter. They are also learning how these letters sound at the beginning of the words and how to listen for their sound. What is to come: March will be filled with 6 letters! The first week of March will include both the letters N and O. For the letter N we will be making noodle necklaces and for the letter O we will be learning fun and exciting things about octopuses. The second week will be dedicated to letter P for Plays! We will be using the story lines from some classic short stories to create scenery in our classroom and act it out. For the letter Q we will be focused on creating a paper quilt in order to encourage classroom unity. The following week will be be about Rain and Rainbows for the letter R. The last week of March will be all about space! As a class we will be encouraged to learn about things like the names of the planets and how far apart they are from each other. News to note: Please continue to pack your child with a lunch that includes fruit, veggies and protein. March 2016 “How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?” - Dr. Seuss Welcome to March! The year is flying by, but hopefully spring is finally here and we will be able to spend more time outside. Please make sure your child is dressed in layers, as we want them to be comfortable while playing outside everyday no matter what the weather may throw at us. During the months of January and February, the children honed their Internet research skills by using a laptop to find facts about the New England states. These facts were shared with the group so that the children could also learn from each other. Also during meeting, the children learned the lyrics to the “50 States that Rhyme Song,” which was practiced and sang as a group almost every day. The children have worked so hard on the song, and during March they will have the chance to perform in front of other HEDP groups! Additionally in the upcoming month, the children will be reading Dr. Seuss books and work on creating rhyming words just like the rhyming master himself, Dr. Seuss. We will enjoyed some Dr. Seuss themed snacks such as “One Fish, Two Fish” goldfish, “Cat in the Hat” kabob made out of bananas and strawberries, and of course, Green Eggs and Ham. All of these activities will challenge the children to read and and follow directions and practice mathematical skills such as creating patterns and measuring. The children have shared that they enjoy and look forward to participating in arts and music projects led by Zoe on Mondays, Wednesday's, and Fridays, so these activities will continue during the month of March. Our special readers will continue to share stories with the class every Tuesday during the month of March. A couple of reminders: Please sign your child out EVERYDAY! All belongings left at extended will be taken to the lost and found at the end of each day. The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. ~ Dr. Seuss Welcome to March! We hope all of you had a great fun filled February! We can’t believe it’s already March 2016 these past few months have just flown by! In February, we enjoyed playing in the snow, daily trivia challenges, making cupcakes, learning about the sense of taste and our chewed our way through the great bubble gum challenge! This month we will focus on a number of the children’s goals that they determined in back September. March goals will focus on cooking, drawing, and sports. March will also be centered around our favorite author, Dr. Seuss. We will be reading a different Dr. Seuss book each day, and doing activities that are comparable with the books we read i.e. making “green eggs and ham”, Oobleck, Seuss Kabobs, Seuss Pizza. Our class will also be voting on what Dr.Seuss movie we will watch and compare the book to the movie. Everyone is excited to share in these activities! A couple of reminders This months birthday bash will be March 10th please sign your child out EVERYDAY!. All belongings left at extended will be taken to the lost and found at the end of each day. She was offered a position in Brookline Public Schools at the Devotion and Runkle that she could not pass up. We are sad to see her go but feel excited to hear that she will be living her dream and teaching Spanish. 3/4 After an extra-long February, 3/4 is looking forward to a fun-filled March. We will continue working on individual student goals, and we will also begin celebrating our “holidays.” A few weeks ago, each student was asked to create and describe an original holiday. We voted on the top 3 most popular ones and will begin to plan how we will celebrate these special days. The winning holidays were “Prank Day,” “Video Game Day/Junk Food Day/Sports Day,” and “Challenge Day/Week.” We are all looking forward to these special days! During March, a new group of students will be joining Zoe for a weekly art session this month. Zoe began a long-term clay unit towards the end of February that will continue into March. These students will be using kiln-fired clay to learn about slab building skills, glazing chemistry, and decorating techniques. They are hoping to turn these clay creations into flower pots as spring approaches. Do you know where hot dogs were invented? Or what the word “ample” means? At our daily meeting time, we began a new tradition in February that we will continue through the end of the school year. On “Mappy Mondays,” “Wordy Wednesdays,” and “Fun-Fact Fridays,” students will have a chance to present geography facts, vocabulary words, and interesting facts to our group three times a week.
