April 2013 Heath Extended Day 3-6 Newsletter What to look forward to in April During the month of April, 3-6 will be doing a one week theme based on the spring early release day field trips for the next four weeks. Week 1: Movie Theme: During Movie week students will make commercials, play movie trivia, make gourmet popcorn and participate in improvisational theater games! Week 2: Science: During this week, students will participate in a variety of science experiments. We will also be bringing back the very popular EGGBERT project. Students will create a “safe home” for their egg and the have a chance to drop it from the balcony on the side of the school. The goal of their “safe home” is to protect their egg from cracking! Week 3: Community Service: During community service week, students will be participating in a variety of community services around the Heath community. Week 4: Sports: During sports week, 3-6 will host a Field Day of different athletic events! Also, students will participate in minute-to-win it events! No School April Vacation: April 15th- April 19th Early Release Days: Please be sure to return slips ASAP! We will also bring craft projects outside so that students can have a variety of options ranging from sports and tag to arts and crafts. PRE K APRIL NEWS...................HAPPY SPRING!Important Days To Remember...
Wednesday April 3rd- Early Release/ No Pre K Thursday April 11th- Early Release/ No Pre K April Vacation 15th-19th/ No school Wednesday April 24th- Early Release/ No Pre K Please note: If your child is registered to attend Extended Day on Mondays and you would like to swap this day for another day in the same week, please let Alyssa, Jackie or Noelle know. We are moving along with our alphabet unit, this month we will begin with Q, with great focus on how U is Q’s best mate! Runner up will be R followed by S and T ending our month and bringing us into May. Our month in review will look like this, but not necessarily in this order; Quails singing, rabbits hopping, rainbow challenges, snakes slithering in homemade moon sand, tape art , turtles under umbrellas and art science with baking soda and food coloring. Lysol disinfectant spray Be well and enjoy your month!.. Jackie and Alyssa APRIL We hope everyone had a wonderful March! We finally finished our alphabet books, despite all our snow days!! We enjoyed reading many great stories and creating wonderful art projects. We welcomed Spring by creating a new bulletin board outside the classroom, we hope it brings the warm weather! We celebrated two birthdays on March 22nd by decorating sugar cookies and crown cards! These next few months we will be focusing on interesting places throughout the United States. We will explore different cities and National Parks. We will be wearing our chef hats to cook up regional favorites; like New England Apple Pie and Southwest Salsa! We will also conduct several science experiments and learn a little history. We are excited to learn fun facts about the USA along with the children. For the month of April we will be learning about New England, The Southwest, The Mid-Atlantic States and The Southeast. If you plan on traveling during April vacation please let us know if you would like to take Flat Stanley along. He has been on some great adventures and we believe he has so much more to explore!! This month we have three (3) early release days at 12:30pm.

I know that all of the friends in our class are excited for the warmer weather and we are as well but please make sure your child brings boots that have an affinity for mud, due to the fact that there is sooo much in and around the playground. Wellies would be perfect if you have them. Last month we organized our first Hawaii Day and it was a great success! The class took part in Hawaii 5 o trivia, they learned the difference between coconut water and milk, figured out how many drops it would take to crack a coconut, made Hawaiian smoothies and an ambrosia fruit salad then finally ended our day with a luau! Please check out the artwork on the walls in the classroom, the children worked quite hard on the spring garden theme as well as their Georgia O’Keefe flowers. Our friend Thomas headed up the planets and martians scene while celebrating Uranus’s birthday, so check that out as well! The classroom Bean Jar is filling up, we are more than halfway to the top, which means there will be a cupcake party in our future! Our second grade friend Leo has started a Monopoly craze, he has been teaching friends to buy, buy, buy and explaining to them that happiness is buying property! Speaking of buying things... Throughout the month of April we will be introducing the concept of money, how it affects our daily life, how we earn it, and knowing when to save it and when to buy things with it.We will start on our HEDP “bank”, which will be located in our classroom. Ever since we have discussed this with the class they have been asking when it will happen and how they can use their money in our class, this should be lots of fun! We will be having our very first SuperHero Day on the 9th, where we will be having Superhuman Trivia, making our own superhero capes and cooking some food that will give us some super power energy while we play games together.
