May/June
2015 Heath Extended Day 4-7 Newsletter During the month of May and June... This month we will be finishing up the last of our Wish Days and Yearly Student Goals. Now that there is finally no snow on the field, all of the sport wish days can be fulfilled. We will host structured games of soccer, capture the flag, baseball, and football. Additionally, cooking goals that we will work towards this month will include baking cake (and learning how to do it from scratch), making homemade ice cream, and learn how to make Canadian Bacon- which we will incorporate in our May Family Dinner which will be the popular breakfast for dinner.. Also during these months we will be doing an art unit using clay. Students will have the opportunity to make characters, figures, and objects using clay. When complete and dry students will paint their pieces, seal them, and bring them home. 4th grade Trippin Out preview.... On 6/11, fourth grade students will have the opportunity to take a trip to Cleveland Circle for a scavenger hunt as a Trippin Out preview for next year. Trippin Out is a one of a kind program for 5th, 6th, and 7th graders. Each week, students enrolled in trippin out go to various locations around the city to do homework, eat a snack, do an activity, and socialize. This year students in trippin out visited Brookline Public Library, Boston College, Boston University, Summit Park, Cleveland Circle, Panera, Brookline Booksmith, The Clay Room, Applebee's, The Street, Wegmans, The Chestnut Hill Mall, Paris Creperie, Otto's Pizza, and more! Please look for more information regarding this special 4th grade trip! Heath Extended Day End of the Year Party... This event will look a bit different to some of us as we will not be hosting a big party. However, we will be holding a screening of our year on Thursday, 6/18 from 5:15-5:40pm. Each classroom will also be holding a portfolio preview week 6/15-6/18 from 4pm-5:30pm. We invite each of you to pop in and take 15 or so minutes to check out your child's portfolio. Each child has a portfolio that holds a collection of items that symbolize his/her growth over the year and we look forward to sharing it with you. Heath Extended Day End of the Year Party... 1st grade news JUNE 2015 In April and May, the children learned about each continent including special animals, people and cultures that exist on each continent. They worked diligently to prepare their end of the year project and are eagerly waiting to showing off what they learned to their parent(s) during Portfolio Week. Their projects will be on display June 15th-19th from 4:00p.m. -5:30p.m. We hope you will be able to stop by and spend at least 15 minutes of learning about what your child has learned while in HEDP. During the month of June, we will continue to enjoy having special readers come to our class every Tuesday. It has been wonderful to see the children taking the time to observe and acknowledge random acts of kindness. Therefore, we will continue to have a “shout out” board by the Multipurpose Room that the children can post their observations on. We will also be heading over to the sprinklers at Elliot field on warmer days that the weather is suitable. Please send a ziplock bag labeled with your child’s name on it and enclose a beach towel and bathing suit with your child’s name that he/she can leave at HEDP. Your child can change into it when they arrive to HEDP on the days that the class has the opportunity to cool down in the sprinklers. Finally, many of the children have expressed an interest in doing science experiments, therefore we will be making predictions and observations for the remainder of the year as we conduct experiments within the classroom. A couple of reminders: Please sign your child out EVERYDAY! All belongings left at extended will be taken to the lost and found at the end of each day. The Heath School lost and found is located near the elevator on the first floor of the building by Dr. Miners office. Special Events: Monday-Thursday, June 15-18: Portfolio Week 4:00p.m. - 5:30p.m. Friday, June 19th: HEDP Slide Show 5:15p.m. Friday, June 26: Last Day of School. Please let us know if your child will be absent at any time. Classroom teacher do not let us know if your child will be absent from HEDP. Please phone us at 617-879-4565 or email us at [email protected] if your child will be absent. This is essential as we tend to spend the first 30 minutes of our day tracking down children. We thank you for your cooperation. Donations to our classroom are greatly appreciated! This month our wish list items include: Lysol wipes, paper towels wiffle balls and a plastic bat Warmly, Ellie & Diana -- JUNE
WOW! Another school year is over. It feels like we just started our adventure as the extended day class of 2014! As they say,” time goes by when you are having fun!” and that was defiantly the case with us this year. It started with learning all about each other, focusing on how to be a good friend to learning about nature and animals, to celebrating Halloween, experimenting with Science, cooking new and unique foods, strengthening our writing skills, conducting research, sewing, knitting and bonding with friends. We will end the year with HEDP Wish Days and water games. The children have had fun and worked extremely hard all year. It has been such a pleasure to get to know all the children and watch them grow and develop over this year. OH, how they all have changed! We would like to thank all of our parents for your support this year, your children are very special to us and we thank you for letting us have the opportunity to teach them. We love their funny stories, their eagerness to learn and willingness to do new and exciting things. We appreciate all the support and understanding we received from parents throughout these ten months! This month we are going to focus on learning about professional athletes and learn about glow n the dark. Hopefully if the weather cooperates we will spend some more time outdoors, playing water games, using the sprinklers and enjoying special treats in the sun! Please be sure to bring in a bathing suit, towel and water shoes for your child. Please have these items in a labeled bag. On June 4th and 15th we will be celebrating our last Birthday Bash for all our summer birthdays with an ice cream social! We wish all our second and third graders the best next year. We hope to see everyone next year, even if it’s just for a visit. A couple of reminders this month… *Please be sure to take home all your child’s belongings *Birthday Bash on June 4th and 15th *Friday, June 26th is the last day of HEDP *Please bring in a bathing suit, towel, and water shoes to leave at HEDP in order for children to go in the sprinklers. Please have these items in a labeled bag to prevent them from being misplaced. Have a great summer!!!!! Sincerely, Sofia, Robin, Josh, Emily and Ben |
