![]() Welcome to Kindergarten Extended Day September, 2012 Welcome to Kindergarten Heath Extended Day. We are excited to begin the school year and meet new families and see new faces! The Kindergarten team consists of four co-teachers, Alyssa and Molly as one team and Sofia and Angelica as the other. The Kindergarten extended day classes are located in the new addition to our school! Rooms 100 and 101. Throughout the month of September we look forward to exploring with apples, we will be using them to create art, do cooking activities, graphing and taste testing among other projects. Along will exploring apples we will focusing on and observing the season changes from summer to fall. Each month we will be doing an art appreciate project in which we study an artist and create pieces of art work, so keep your eyes peeled for art work in the hall ways. Each month we will be incorporating a science theme. In order to incorporate this theme we will devote one day a week for science exploration. In September we will be exploring the concept of “sink or float.” September Books: -Apple Trouble -Up, Up, Up it’s Apple Time -Apples -Fall Schedule 2:20-2:30 Your child will be PICKED UP at their designated daily classroom by and extended day teacher. 2:30 Arrive and put belongings in cubbies. ![]() September 2012 Newsletter We hope everyone’s summer was full of adventure, happiness and some well-deserved relaxation! We are very excited to be back and see all of our friends from last year as well as meet some new friends. This year is going to be great!!! Let me introduce the new 1-2 team! There is the wonderfully talented Rachel Akiba, who taught in kindergarten and headed up the art clubs last year, the witty and clever Jonathan Krieger, who worked in 1-2 and led a popular writing club with the 3-6 students, and me, Jackie Lattuca (a.k.a. The dog rescuer), who taught 1-2 and founded our cooking club. We will work together to create an environment that encourages creativity, social awareness, exploration, humanity, and building a strong community with each other. Cheers to a great year!! Smiles, Jackie, Rachel and Jonathan ![]() September 2012 Heath Extended Day 3-6 News Welcome Back 3-6 Families! Welcome returning families, new families, and 3rd grade families! We hope you all had a very enjoyable relaxing summer, and are ready to begin another year with Heath Extended Day! We are looking forward to the opportunity to work with you and your child and learn about your child’s goals and interests to create a program tailored to fit this year’s 3-6 group. We are excited to announce that the Malaina LeSage, Ellie Edraos , Kevin Doherty and Jared Mael have returned for another year teaching together with the 3-6 class! Introduction to the 3-6 Teaching Team Malaina LeSage: This will be Malaina’s sixth year working with HEDP’s 3-6 students. Malaina is a graduate of Umass Amherst and has been working in an after-school setting for the past ten years. Malaina enjoys reading, cooking, and watching Boston sports! Ellie Edraos: Ellie is excited to be returning to work with 3rd-6th graders who attend HEDP for her second year. Ellie enjoys horseback riding, spending time with family and friends, and cooking. Kevin Doherty: This will be Kevin's second year working with HEDP's 3-6 students Kevin is an alumni from Wheaton College (MA) and has been working as a paraprofessional in the Brookline system since 2005. Kevin enjoys making people laugh, spending time with family/friends, and coaching. Jared Mael: Jared excitedly returns to HEDP for his fourth year. This is the second year that he will be doing various clubs at extended day and is looking forward to bringing new experiences to all of the HEDP families!! Jared enjoys movies, musical instruments, cooking, science, computers, outdoor activities, sports, and Ice skating. Tentative 3-6 Daily Schedule 2:20 Arrival and Attendance Please call or email HEDP as early as possible if your child will not be attending HEDP. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as 2:20 is a very busy transition time. 2:30 Homework and Snack A one hour quiet homework/reading time will be provided daily. Students will be given assigned seats in order to make their use of homework time most efficient. All students should bring a book for when they are finished their homework. Students will be able to use additional time later in the day if needed to complete work. Homework help will be provided by HEDP teachers. Snack will be provided daily and students will be given designated times to enjoy their snack. 3:30 Meeting Students will be informed on any news, reminders, special activities and the day’s schedule and events. 3:45 Outdoor Play/Gym/Activities The amount of outdoor time and gym time will depend on the weather and the day’s schedule. We like to provide as much physical activity possible for this age group. Activities will vary depending on the theme of the week. Activities could include arts and crafts, cooking, sewing, beading, sports, group games, board games, drawing, trivia and more! 5:15 Clean up 5:30 Small group game or activity 5:45 HEDP closes Please be aware of late charges which can be found in your HEDP parent contract. Important Information for Parents *Please promptly call or email with a change to your child’s scheduled day or if there is an alternate person picking his/her up. *It is required that your child is signed out daily with your signature and time of pick up. Safety is our number one priority. Please be sure to check in the a 3-6 teacher when picking up your child. This is a great time to communicate about your child’s day. Also, it let’s us know that your child is leaving. *Please read the “news, notes, and reminders” page daily. It will keep you updated on upcoming events, information and reminders. *Mail will be located at the sign out station. Please promptly take any papers with your child’s name on it. We look forward to a wonderful year! ![]() September 3, 2012 Dear Heath Extended Day Families, I hope this letter finds your family well rested and ready for school to begin. With much planning, patients, rearranging and updating for the start of school well underway I would like to share some important information information with you. The first day of school is just around the corner and I am pleased to be spreading this exciting news with you. Our 2012-13 teaching team is composed of many wonderful people that are enthusiastic about the upcoming year. We have put in a tremendous amount of flexibility and effort to help create a warm and nurturing environment for your family! Alyssa Davis and Jackie Latucca will lead our PreK program. Both are returning for a third year in a row and are energized about many new and returning families that will be joining us. The PreK program will take place in the lower extended day (next to the main gym) room from 12:15-2:15pm. The four superior educators that are excited to work with your child & lead the Kindergarten team are Alyssa Davis, Sofia Hamula, Angelica Bianco, and Molly Graham. They are thrilled to work with your child and are well organized and ready for a super year. This program will take place in both Min-Jens classroom and KBK within the new wing of the school. Three amazing people will help create an enjoyable learning environment for all have created a strengthened 1/2 program. Jackie Latucca, Rachel Akiba and Jonathan Kreiger will use their creative talents, past experiences and education to make your child’s afternoon enjoyable. The 1/2 program will take place in the lower extended day room that is next to the main gym. This is also the location of the HEDP office should you need to complete any paperwork. Malaina LeSage, Ellie Edaros, Jared Mael and Kevin Doherty will be taking charge in our 3-6 program. These four fantastic teachers will teach through entertaining and hands on activities that will only enhance learning. We are happy to have such strong dedicated leaders. All three are committed to great afternoon programming that supports and encourages academic learning. This group will be sharing space with the foreign language, METCO and Mrs. Gregoir in the upstairs-extended day room (above the lower level near the gym). We will occupy this space until the renovations are complete. We also welcome a few wonderful assistants from Wheelock College who are thrilled to join our team. Katrin Reeder, Caitlyn Ennis, and Emily St Laurent are looking forward to sharing many expereinces with your family during the next year. They hope to learn more about teaching while working with your child in our program. I am also happy to announce that HEDP is continuing to expand on our Tripping Out (for 5th-7th graders). This program will be lead by a highly organized and well-loved teacher, Malaina LeSage. She has planned many exciting trips for this group of kids. Please keep this in mind when sending special snacks or food for your child.* Because HEDP is becoming more of a cooperative program please look for areas to volunteer in each classroom. These needs will be posted on the information station. There is a mandatory 5 hours volunteer commitment for each family. Families who are applying for tuition assistance need to have all forms mailed to Noelle by September 30th 2012. Please note that our tuition assistance program is highly confidential and we ask that you provide all materials in a sealed envelope. Pre-K On Thursday, September 6th and Friday, September 7th you may pop into HEDP with your child to get acquainted with our teaching team, and our classroom between 11:00-2:00pm. This peak and meet with take place in the HEDP preK classroom which next door to the main gym. Pre-K Extended Day will officially begin on Monday, September 10th at 12:15pm. Alyssa and Jackie will pick the Pre-K children up from Min Jen and Carries preK classrooms. Please send your child with: ~ A packed lunch ~ A change of clothes in a labeled bag ~ A king size pillowcase with his/her name on it ~ A picture of your child with his/her family. Kindergarten On Thursday, September 6th and Friday September 7th, Kindergarten will have an early release. We welcome you and your child to come together to HEDP until 2:15pm. You may bring a lunch and have some fun. Our learning centers will be open for both your and your child in the lower extended day room (next to the gym). We will use this time to get to know you and your child. Kindergarten Extended Day will officially begin on Monday, September 10th at 2:20pm. Alyssa Davis and Molly Graham will pick up the Kindergarteners at 2:20pm and walk them to the HEDP program in the new wing (Min Jen and KBK classrooms). Please provide your child with a change of clothes in a bag with his/her name on it. 1st-6th Graders All are welcome to begin attending HEDP on Thursday, September 6th at 2:20pm. Please look for HEDP teachers in the hall to guide you to our classrooms. We ask that all children bring in one family photo for us to add into our classroom collage. Please note that there will be a homework and reading time (DEAR) each day. So remember to bring your favorite reading materials (books, magazines, newspapers, comics…) Tripping Out The first official trip is set for Thursday September 13th. Please see the calendar for a schedule of events. Please note: all information must be complete before your child can take part in this exciting program. Children with Allergies or Medical Limitations PLEASE contact Noelle ASAP for the required forms. Your child cannot attend HEDP without signed medical forms from a certified practitioner. We also need a full dose of medication when applicable. Please see Noelle for more information. Families We are still missing many registration packets. Please complete them and return them ASAP. All documents are needed before your child begins attending HEDP. This helps ensure that we will be prepared for your child. Updates! Please check our website at www.heathextendedday.org for monthly newsletters, calendars and updates on a regular basis. The annual meeting date has yet to be announced. Please look for notices regarding this mandatory meeting. We are still looking for board members and would love to hear from you shoudl you be interested in joing our board. Please remember to phone HEDP at 617-879-4565 or email us at [email protected] should your child be late or absent from HEDP. Please let us know no later than 1:00pm. Please note that we cannot call to confirm or coordinate play date arrangements for your child. It is essential that you have a handwritten note or email to alert us of a play date. Please note our change of schedule policy that requires all families to pay a $150.00 fee for any change of schedule. The first fee free change period will take place October 15-31st for a December 1st start. All other changes will require a $150.00 fee. Please note that HEDP closes at 5:45. We encourage you to make necessary arrangements should you not be able to make that time. Late fees will go into effect Monday September 22nd. Please be prepared to sign your child out at the end of each day. It is essential that you make a habit of this. Please make an effort to make contact with a teacher and sign your child out each day. If a nanny or babysitter will be picking up your child, please be sure they have a picture ID for the first few weeks. Get ready for a terrific year.
