 OCTOBER We hope all of you are getting back into the routine of school. This first month has been a great success! We have really enjoyed reconnecting with your children and hearing all the fun stuff they did this summer. We started off the year creating a time capsule, listing all our favorites and entering information to complete our “Me Books”. We hope to look back at both these projects at the end of the school year and see how we’ve changed. We have had fun exploring with aerodynamics and plan to continue making Science fun in the upcoming months. As a class we have spent a great deal of time getting to know one another and learning how to be a good friend. We will continue to improve on using our words to express our emotions and learn strategies to solve conflict. Our class has celebrated two of the children’s birthdays in September on the 23rd with a birthday bash! The children had fun decorating and eating cupcakes! This month we will get into the Fall season and explore with leaves. We will discover who helps our community and visit the Fire Station on October 11th. Please remember to return your child’s permission slip, so that they may join us. We will be learning about Christopher Columbus and his voyage to the new world in celebration of Columbus Day. We will get into the spirit of Halloween by learning about owls, spiders skeletons and pumpkins. The 1st grade Extended Day will have a Halloween Party on Thursday, October 31st so please have your child bring a costume to change into after school. 4-6 Heath Extended Day News What have we been up to? Students in the 4-6 room packed the month of September setting goals for themselves, planning family dinners, working on “all about me” time capsules, enjoying the weather while playing on the playground, getting together teams of football and soccer, learning new board games and card games, writing shout outs to their classmates, cooking apple recipes, challenging themselves on daily challenges, and so much more! Our first 4-6 “family dinner” was a huge success! It truly felt like a huge family gathering where everyone pitched in to create a memorable event. This month’s menu, suggested by the 4-6 students, consisted of lasagna, homemade garlic bread, salad, lemonade, apple cider and oreo ice cream. Students worked in pairs and were assigned a job to help contribute to the entire event. From a lasagna assembling group to a lemonade mixing group to a plate setting group to silverware placing group (and everything in between), the students showed that contribution from everyone and working together creates a special end result. The teachers observed students discussing ways of placing the forks and knives. The students went with a “fancy” way of wrapping them both in the napkin. They also observed students deciding they wanted centerpieces and observed how they took it upon themselves to create a centerpiece of cups and origami candle holders for the flameless candles. After making the cheese mixture, assembling the lasagna, mixing the lemonade, sauteing the garlic for the garlic bread, cutting up the veggies for the salad, mixing the the oreos in the ice cream and preparing a set table, the students played outside and patiently waited the hour for the lasagna to cook. When time was up, students sat as a 4-6 family at the recreated “dining room table” and began their dinner with a toast to the first 4-6 family dinner. Teachers reminded students to put their napkins on their lap and to wait for everyone to have food on their plate to begin eating. They used their manners while asking each other to “please pass the salad” and waited until everyone was finished eating to begin clean up. Throughout the family dinner, students laughed and chatted with each other and ate until their stomachs were full (of course they saved room for dessert)! Each student had to clear his or her own plate and contributed to the clean up. We are so proud of all the 4-6 students for all of their hard work and teamwork that was needed to make this event so successful and fun! October events in 4-6! What better way to celebrate the Red Sox postseason than with a playoff party?! On Friday, October 4th, the 4-6 class will celebrate the Red Sox on the day of their first division series games. Students can show their team spirit by wearing Red Sox apparel or team colors. Activities will include face painting, trivia, a 4-6 baseball game, hotdog eating, popcorn making, games, and more! On Thursday, October 31st, 4-6 will have a Halloween Extravaganza! Students are more than welcome to bring in his/her Halloween costume to change into at HEDP. There will be Halloween activities, games and prizes, donut eating contest and more! Also throughout the month of October, there will be Halloween crafts, pumpkin carving, gourd decorating and fall cooking! We will celebrate October birthdays with a birthday bash on Thursday, October 24th and have our October family dinner on Tuesday, October 15th! Shout Out Board The students have worked so hard on the 4-6 shout out board and have been doing a fantastic job going above and beyond for their classmates and teachers. In addition, students have been doing an equally fantastic job at giving recognition and “thank yous” to students that have been performing acts of kindness. Please take a moment to read all the kinds words and actions the 4-6 students have been involved in! The shout out board is located at the top of the stairs in the 4-6 room! 2-3 NEWS LETTER October is here and the children are transitioning well into the 2-3 extended day classroom routine. During the fall season the temperatures can change quickly as the day progresses, so we ask that all children dress in layers and bring the necessary clothing to be comfortable outside (coats, hats, gloves, etc…). We spend at least an hour outside everyday and we would like them to be comfortable and enjoy their time outside. During the month of October the group will have the opportunity to show their creativity by making gauze mummies out of jars, pudding cups that look like Frankenstein, create Halloween themed clay creations, create spiders and ghosts out of lollipops, bake a delicious pumpkin pie, paint gourds, and of course participate in the school wide door decorating contest. To help defray the cost of the gourd painting activity and promote sharing within our 2-3 community, we are asking each child to bring two gourds to extended day. Furthermore, the 2-3 classroom is in need of clean glass jars for activities planned during the first week of October. Whats happening in PreK and K Extended Day- During the month of September the children explored the toys and learned the classroom rules and procedures. It was wonderful to meet new families and get to know your children, they worked very hard to created “All about me” books and we did an apples exploration unit which included apple prints, apple tasting and graphing, and baking. Please keep your eyes peeled for our art work in the hallway. Through October we will be investigating the changes of fall, nature and creepy crawlers. We will be going on a nature walk, creating faces using leaves, twigs, and other artifacts the children collect outdoors, along with acorn art. We will be exploring leaves doing leaf rubbings, and prints as well. During our “creepy crawlers week we will be reading “The very hungry caterpillar” by Eric Carle and creating crafts along with using marbles and yarn to create spider webs. In preparation for halloween the children will be exploring pumpkins. As a class we will be carving a jack-o-lantern. In carving the jack-o-lantern we will be exploring the different textures and components of the pumpkin. THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND -Friday, October 4th- We encourage children to wear Red Sox gear if they are interested to support the Boston Red Sox this playoff season!! GO SOX!! -Monday, October 14th- Columbus Day, No School -Friday, October 25th-We will be having a birthday bash for the children whom has birthdays in October. Wednesday October 30th- We will be having a halloween party full of treats and crafts on. On this day we will be creating crafts and doing face painting, so are asking children not to dress in costume. Heath Extended Day 4-6 News! Welcome Back Families! We hope you all had a wonderful summer and look forward to seeing all of you and the students! This year’s 4-6 teaching team will be Malaina LeSage, Kevin Doherty and Jackie Lattuca. We are all so excited to start another school year and to have the opportunity to spend the afternoons with your child! We have many new ideas and activities for the 4-6 students and look forward to collaborating with them about their own ideas and expectations for the year, in order to create a cirriculum that suppports their needs and interests! Daily Schedule Mondays-Thursdays 2:30-2:40: Arrival and Attendance: Students will walk directly to extended day and check-in with an extended day teacher. Please be sure to email or call HEDP at your as early as possible if there is a change in your child’s schedule for the day. 2:40-3:40: Homework and Snack: Students will be given an hour of structured homework/reading time each afternoon and help will be provided as needed. Snack will be provided each afternoon. 3:40-4:00: Meeting and Daily Challenge: A quick meeting to go over any news and announcements will be held after homework time. We will also go over the daily challenge and announce the winner(s) of the daily challenge. Daily Challenges Monday: Unscramble- Unscramble the letters to make a word. Tuesday: Brain Strain- Puzzles, Riddles, etc. Wednesday: Counting Jar- Guess how many? Thursday: Trivia- Questions from all subject areas. 4:00-5:30: Outside play/Gym/Activities: Depending on the weather, theme and interests of the students a wide variety of activities will held during this time. Activities will include but are not limited to- sports, cooking, arts and crafts, sewing, board games, computers and trivia. 5:30-5:45: Cooperative Games: The last fifteen minutes will be dedicated to cooperative group games to wind down the day. Fridays 1:40-1:50: Arrival and Attendance 1:50-2:30: Friday Books and Attendance: Friday books include magazines, comic books and more! If you have any old magazines that your child already read and are looking to get rid of them, we would be happy to take them off your hands! 2:30-2:50: Meeting and Friday Share: Students can use this time as they please to share something special with the class during a structured time. In the past, we had lots of students share fun facts or write and share stories with the class! 2:50-5:30: Outside play/Gym/Activities 5:30-5:45: Cooperative Games 4-6 “family” dinner Each month the 4-6 students and the 4-6 teachers will have a “family dinner.” Students will be a part of the whole dinner experience- coming up with the menu, preparing the meal, setting the table, passing the food that will be served family style and clearing the table. Students will learn about good manners and etiquette while at the table and learn about food preparation and following recipes. This will be a great opportunity for the group to work together as a team and then sit down together as a “4-6 family” and socialize and reflect over a nice meal together. The day of the week that we will have our 4-6 “family” dinner will change each month to ensure each student is part of this wonderful learning opportunity. This is just one of the many ways 4-6 will work to build community in the classroom, develop and strengthen friendships, practice team-work and learn important life skills. Student Shout-Outs Starting in September and continuing throughout the school year, student shout outs will be posted on the 4-6 stairway wall. If a student would like to give a shout out to another student in the classroom for doing something that demonstrated thought, consideration, kindness, care, positivity towards him/her, someone else in the classroom, or the classroom as a whole, he/she can write the shout out on designated shout out cards and put it in the shout out bin. Teachers will read any shout out that have been given and then add them to the shout out wall. Please take a moment and read all the nice things the 4-6 students are doing for each other as they are posted. We also find it just as important for students to take these moments to not only do kind things, but, also be able to recognize when kind things are happening! Student Goals During the first few weeks of school, 4-6 teachers will be interviewing your child to learn more about what his/her goal is for the school year. Based on the goals that the students give, we will create a curriculm to help your child accomplish his/her goal. News, Notes and Reminders -Please sign your child out daily in the upstairs extended day 4-6 room and check in with a teacher each afternoon at pick up. We enjoy saying hello to you and telling you about your child’s day! It was such a pleasure working with this group of students last year and we look forward to another year with all of them!  September Newsletter 2013 As the summer visits us for one last time, the 2-3 HEDP classroom teachers are eagerly preparing for the children to arrive. The Team is looking forward to learning about each individual child’s interest and creating safe, fun filled activities around these interests. The 2-3 Team is composed of Ellie Edraos who is returning for her third year at HEDP. This summer she enjoyed lounging by the pool while reading and spending time at the barn with her horses. Ellie is very excited about having a fun filled year with all the 2nd and 3rd graders and is looking forward to getting to know them. Priscilla Bartley is returning to HEDP after taking off one year. She is coming back a new graduate of UMass Boston with her masters in Special Education, Moderate Disabilities K-8. She spent her summer spending quality time with her family and doing what she loves best...working with children. Priscilla is very excited to see some familiar faces in grades 2 and 3 as well as see some new ones. Caitlyn Ennis is returning for her second year at Heath Extended day. She is a Junior at Wheelock College and is studying Social Work. Over the summer Caitlyn nannied for a family in Concord and worked at Kimball Farms where she scooped Ice Cream. In her free time, Caitlyn traveled to Maine and New Hampshire and spent time with friends and family. During the month of September the 2-3 children will be focusing on activities with a Fall theme and working on team building activities that will help them transition into the 2013-2014 school year. During a typical day we encourage you to come observer your child enjoying his/her time at Extended Day. As your child’s safety is our top priority, if your child is going to be absent from Heath Extended day, please call 617.879.4565 before 2:00p.m. on the day of the absents or email [email protected]. News letters will be published at the beginning of every month and your child’s goals will be incorporated into our curriculum as the school year progresses. Our daily schedule will consist of a meeting, snack, homework time, outdoor play, activity, free choice and story time. We encourage children to bring books or items they are interested in reading from home or provide a list to us. This will help during our homework and DEAR time. Welcome to Kindergarten Heath Extended Day. We are excited to begin the school year and meet new families and see new faces! The Kindergarten team consists of two teachers, Alyssa Davis and Jared Mael. The Kindergarten extended day class is located in Min-Jen Taylor’s Pre-K classroom in the new addition across from the Multi-Purpose room. Throughout the month of September we will exploring three main themes, “All about Me and My Family”, Apples, and Fall. We will kick off the first week of extended day by learning the procedures of the classroom and meeting our new friends. Then we will begin discussing our families and creating an “all about me” book for each child. The goal of this theme is for the children to develop an understanding of family patterns, discover similarities and differences between families, and for the teachers to gain insight about each child’s home life. When we wrap up our “all about me” unit, we will be exploring apples and the fall season, as it is moving in briskly! We will us apples to create art, do cooking activities, graphing and taste testing among other projects. Along will exploring apples we will focusing on and observing the season changes from summer to fall. Each month we will be incorporating a science theme. In order to incorporate this theme we will devote one or two days a week for science exploration. In September we will be exploring the concept of “sink or float.” Through the month of September we look forward to getting to know your child and family better. We are excited to create fun art projects, so please keep your eyes peeled in our entrance hallway for our displays. We hope you have a sensational September!
