Heath Extended Day 4-7 News! What has been happening in 4-7 Wow! The first month of the school year has flown by! The kids were very busy in the month of September setting their personal goals, taking part in daily challenges, creating pictures for the shout out board, sewing clothes for dolls, learning the classroom expectations and schedule, playing games, playing “pick up” sports outside, catching up on old friendships and creating new ones. We are so excited to learn and talk about each child’s personal goal for the year. From Science goals, to cooking goals, to sports goals to academic goals we have great ideas for a curriculum based around these goals! For the September family dinner, the children made breakfast for dinner.. Students worked in small groups to prepare scrambled eggs, pancakes, hash browns, bacon, and chocolate pudding (for dessert)! They did a great job communicating with each other and working together to create family dinner. We noticed that students in the pancake group communicated a plan to take turns pouring the batter and flipping the pancakes, while students in the pudding group read the package directions and whipped up three huge bowls of pudding. We had a lovely family dinner and a special toast from one of our 6th grade students “to HEDP!” What to look forward to in October Continuing on in the month of October students will be painting “inspirational art” on canvas. In small groups, students will brainstorm ideas for creating a painting with theme of friendship, teamwork, kindness and/or encouragement. They will be more than welcome to come up with their own theme as well. Students can use quotes and words in their paintings in order to get their inspirational message across. Some students have already begun their inspirational art and we are so pleased with the messages they have portrayed through their paintings. Once complete, the canvas artwork will be displayed in the 4-7 stairway. Also during the month of October, we will begin a Science themed unit.. During these two weeks, students will participate in Science activities and experiments with a fall and Halloween theme. Students will make predictions and observations during each of the experiments. Although the Halloween Science experiments will be gross and gooey, we are sure that is just what they will enjoy! In the last two weeks of October, students will participate in Halloween crafts and activities. 4-7 will host October family dinner will take place on Tuesday, October 28th Reminders - It is important to sign your child out daily. Can you believe we have already been in school for a month? As the weather is cooling down and the leaves are changing we have fun fall activities planned. They range from science experiments to arts and crafts. We have started our science journals where we are documenting the changing trees outside. We will be experimenting with leaves and around Halloween and dissolving candy. We will be using our sense of taste by eating different types of apples and charting which flavor is our favorite. As well as doing art with apples. On Monday October 6th we visited the Brookline Firehouse for fire prevention week. The children were very excited to see the firehouse and hear the fire fighters speak. Please talk with your children regarding an emergency evacuation plan at home. Thank to all the families who donated thank you cards. Our birthday bash will be the 23rd celebrating all our October birthdays. Wish List *Mini pumpkins *Coffee filters *Dixie cups *Yoga mats Thank you! Angelica Mackenzie Christiane OCTOBER
We hope all of you are getting back into the routine of school. This first month has been a great success! We have really enjoyed reconnecting with your children and hearing all the fun stuff they did this summer. We started off the year getting to know each other and focusing how we can be good friends to each other. Through a variety of activities, including interviews and creating "All About Me Posters" we hope the 2nd and 3rd graders have become comfortable with one another and can work as one big team from this point on. The children also created half portraits of themselves and we hope to look back at both these projects at the end of the school year and see how we’ve changed. We will continue to work on being respectful to others and ourselves, improve on using our words to express our emotions and learn different strategies to solve conflict. Our class has celebrated three of the children’s birthdays in September the with a birthday bash! The children had fun decorating and eating cupcakes! This month we will get into the Fall season and explore with leaves and pumpkins. We will experiment with science and work on several different experiments, including a straw rocket! We will get into the Halloween spirit by creating Halloween crafts and having a Halloween Party on Friday, October 31st so please have your child bring a costume to change into after school.
