Our visit to the State House was great! The 2/6 group has been learning about the state of MA for the last two weeks and they kept our tour guide on his toes. Our questions were "fantastic"!

Heath Extended Day 2-6 Newsletter March In a Minute During the month of March we learned about Ireland. We made recipes from the country such as soda bread and cheesy potato Irish casserole. In addition, we made historic monuments from Ireland. Children recreated chapels, castles and tombs from Dublin. The children also learned about science during this month as well. They discovered the effects of yeast on several sugary beverages. Also students discovered where their food comes from and how many different countries are included to create everyday foods. We learned about forensic investigating by making rubbing of shoes and discovering who these footprints belonged to. Lastly, the children performed an experiment to discover how much fat there was in a variety of snack foods. Spring Fever During the first two weeks in April, the 2-6 children will learn about Massachusetts. We will engage the children with many hands on activities and projects along with Massachusetts trivia and a trip to the State House. They will learn about Massachusetts history, state icons, government, map, historic cities and much more! We will also be cooking foods that are of importance to our state. Did you know that Boston Cream Pie is Massachusetts official state pie? We look forward to sharing some new fun facts about the state we live it! During the last week in April, in honor of Earth Day that falls during April vacation, the kids will learn about reducing, reusing and recycling. We have man exciting art and crafts projects planned that will all be made out of recycled materials. If you have any recyclables that you want taken out of your hands, we will gladly take them! Upcoming Events, News and Reminders…. -April 14th Early Release: Movie Theater Trip -April 27th Early Release: Look for notices about this date. -May 5th Early Release: Red Sox Game. Spots are filling up quickly. Please return permission slips ASAP. -Unless otherwise noted, the 2-6 signout book will stay in the cafeteria until 5:30 daily. After 5:30 we will bring the signout book with us to either the gym or upstairs. Please remember to indicate time of pick up. We have been continuing with our letter of the week in Pre-K, we will be starting April off with the letter U. Through our letter of the week activities the students become familiar with the sounds of each letter, the shape each letter holds, and how to write each letter. Our activities daily include a book and a craft that relates to our theme or letter of the week.
Work Out Wednesdays! On Wednesdays Nelly joins us for a yoga! Wednesday afternoons from 12:30 to 1:30 Nelly, our yoga instructor, joins us and does a session with the kids. As well as yoga Nelly incorporates spanish language into her lesson. We are working to reiterate the spanish words they are learning. The children have begun working on individual yoga books, in order to reiterate the poses and spanish language they are learning. These books will be sent home at the end of the school year. In honor of the spring season, despite the weather, we are going to bring spring into our classroom. Pre-K created a paper tulip garden to brighten our classroom, it is located in the entrance way to HEDP. Continuing with a spring theme we will be painting ceramic pots and planting seedlings. Through these fun activities we will be learning about how flowers grow. Check out our window ledge for our spring blossoms! Announcements -Since January we have been lucky enough to have student interns from Wheelock College joining us! Regretfully our student will be wrapping up there time with us at the End of April, as they begin to prepare for finals. We will be working on cards and preparing the kids for their departure. -Please keep in mind that multiple early release days will be occurring this month -Wednesday, April 6th -Thursday, April 14th -Wednesday, April 27th *Please keep in mind that on these days there is NO PRE-K EXTENDED DAY. If your child is registered to attend these days, and you would like to swap for another day during THE SAME WEEK, please let us know.* Whats happening in April at Extended Day?
In honor of the spring season, despite the weather, we kicked April off by painting ceramic pots with spring colors and planting seedlings. Through these fun activities we will be learning about how flowers grow and watch them bloom. Keep your eyes on our window ledge to see our spring blossoms come to life. We are proud to announce that many children have been earning wish day! A wish day is a reward for earning 10 homework stars on their homework charts. Each day children 4-6 children receive a sticker for doing what is expected during homework and D.E.A.R time (Drop everything and read). Our homework time last 15-20 minutes Monday through Thursday and we expect the children to be focused, calm, and productive. Wish Days granted in the Month of April! We celebrated Declan’s wish day by having a picnic at Eliot Field, playing a class wide game of kickball, and having Declan’s choice of chocolate brownies for snack! Through the month we will celebrate wish days for Tian-Hao, Nicki, and Michael. All the children will earn a wish day by the end of the school year! So stay tuned to hear the wishes granted at HEDP!! Permission slips are in the mailboxes, and each child must sign up for a trip by Wednesday April 13th. -Wednesday, April 27th- We will begin working and illustrating our short stories!
