September Newsletter
9/1/2017 This Month: Welcome back! This year our team is made up of third and fourth grade students. We will be based in the school’s cafeteria, and our team name is the “Bears.” We look forward to starting group cooking, sports, art and science activities together in the coming weeks of September. We are easing into things this year by sharing a little about ourselves at our meetings each day. Each student will be given a paper bag that they can fill with a few things from home to share during our meeting to let their friend’s know what some of their interests are and how they like to pass their time at home. Please remind your children to bring in a book that they find interesting in the event that they finish their homework early. Each day we will have a 45 minute homework block and we have many books for the children to look through, but it is always helpful for the kids to have a compelling book on hand. Upcoming: Nick is looking forward to beginning an ongoing “Artist of the Month” unit, where the Bears can learn about unqiue artists throughout this schoolyear. We will encourage the Bears to share the names of different artist’s they are already interested in, and hopefully share some great new information and artwork with the kids as the year progresses. On September 21st school will be closed for Rosh Hashana. Today in History: Each day we will share a Today in History topic with the Bears. For example: Last friday, September 8th, the kids learned that Ernest Hemingway’s famous short novel The Old Man and the Sea was published on the same day in 1952. We looked at some photos of writer/adventurer Ernest Hemingway and then watched a short, animated adaptation of the story, together. Every day we will find a new Today in History to share, feel free to share any upcoming Today in History topics with your children, as we are always looking for new, unique stories to share. Josh & Nick

SEPTEMBER 2017
Hello families! Ellie is thrilled to be working with Beth Clarke in the 2/3 Tiger Classroom this year. Beth previously taught band class to middle school and high school students in Utah, and is eager to join the Tiger Team. We hope that you have all had a great summer break filled with lots of fun and sun. We are so excited to get started with all the wonderful learning and growing that will take place throughout the school year! We would like to welcome the children who are returning, and the new children that will be joining us for a fun-filled year. During the school year, the children will have the opportunity to interact with friends, as well as work on their homework and independent reading during a designated time while at HEDP. They will also have time each day to run around outside (or inside on rainy or extremely cold days) to get out some of the energy of the school day. The Tiger Team is very excited about the upcoming school year and has planned activities that foster a positive learning environment. During the first month of school the children will be participating in cooperative games and activities that will allow them to get to know each other and teach them how important it is for us to all work together and be good friends. Through team building games and activities that the teachers have planned, we will be looking to start the year off in a positive way with all the children working together and learning about one another. We will also collaborate as a class to agree upon a set of rules that will be used as the guidelines for the way everyone is expected to act while at Extended Day. We are very excited to be in a new space this year using the library as our classroom! We believe that this will allow us to do a wider range of activities, furthering the growth of the Tiger Team children. Please feel free to bring in a change of clothes for your child, tucked in a large Ziploc bag and labeled. Also, please make sure that as the weather changes that children are dressing appropriately because we try to go outside every day to enjoy some fresh air. A couple of reminders this month… * Your child’s safety is one of our main priorities. To help us with this, please remember to sign your child out every day. The sign out book will be located inside the library along with a sign showing the location of the 2/3 Tiger class at that time.
